Creative Direction, Ethical Luxury & Brand Transformation
SAINT was an independent, Canadian-based clean beauty brand founded from necessity rather than trend. Its origin was personal. The founder, Joanna, had developed sensitivities to many of the ingredients commonly used in North American cosmetics and set out to create makeup she could trust—holistic, clean, and proven to work.
When SAINT reached out to collaborate, I asked to test the entire line before committing. I spent months living with the formulas, understanding their performance, wear, and integrity.
The efficacy was undeniable.
The brand expression was not yet aligned.
At the time, SAINT was positioned as a natural clean brand sold through Whole Foods in Canada. The products belonged in a more elevated category, but the packaging, imagery, and structure were holding them back. The opportunity was not reinvention. It was alignment.
Chapter I — The Origin of Conscience
Our first meeting was decisive.
Before discussing visuals or campaigns, I made one thing clear. I would not work with the brand unless the complexion line expanded to serve everyone. At the time, SAINT offered eight foundation shades, largely skewed toward lighter complexions, with only one deeper option.
Joanna was ready for that conversation.
The refusal was not conflict. It was recognition. We shared the same values, and the direction became immediately clear.
During that first meeting, the language arrived naturally.
Cosmetics with Conscience.
The phrase articulated everything the brand stood for. Ethics without compromise. Beauty without exclusion. Luxury grounded in responsibility. The response was immediate. The founder, the CMO, and the entire team aligned around it. It became the spine of the brand and the principle that would guide every decision forward.
Chapter II — Alignment & Elevation
What began as a proposed campaign became a complete brand transformation.
The complexion range expanded from eight shades to 18–25 shades across liquid foundation, powder foundation, and concealer. This was not symbolic inclusion. It was structural, ensuring the formulas could genuinely serve diverse skin tones with integrity.
Packaging followed. With no major production budget, most resources were invested directly into the physical product. Together, we redesigned the packaging to reflect luxury refinement while protecting the integrity of clean formulations. Form and function were treated with equal importance.
Imagery was built with the same discipline. Clean without being clinical. Inclusive without performance. Refined without excess. Diversity was embedded into the system, not positioned as messaging.
Through alignment, the brand matured.
SAINT no longer read as an indie clean label.
It read as ethical luxury done correctly.
The repositioning allowed the brand to transition out of the natural grocery space and into prestige clean beauty, moving from Whole Foods to Credo and Holt Renfrew.
Chapter III — Apotheosis
The work spanned campaign photography, brand and product imagery, packaging redesign, complexion range expansion, and product development research—aligning formulation integrity with luxury execution across every touchpoint.
With the brand fully aligned in product, packaging, imagery, and philosophy, SAINT entered its final phase.
Within two years, the transformation positioned the company for acquisition. The brand was purchased by a well-known public figure and absorbed into a new entity under her name. Due to NDA, the buyer is not disclosed.
SAINT no longer exists as an independent brand.
That is not an ending.
That is the proof.
Project Context
SAINT represents a case where conscience guided creative direction from the first conversation to the final outcome.
It demonstrates how ethical clarity, inclusivity as structure, and disciplined elevation can transform a brand’s trajectory and lead to a successful exit within a short window.
The project reflects Albert Marashi Studio’s approach to creative direction: recognizing alignment early, setting non-negotiables, and building brands that ascend.
